Yapper is local-first. Your audio and transcripts live on your Mac. Cloud features are opt-in, per-request, and clearly labeled.
What stays on your device
- The Whisper transcription model and the audio it transcribes.
- Every dictation you’ve ever made (the timeline).
- Your custom dictionary.
- Your stats, streaks, and word counts.
What goes to the cloud, and only when you opt in
- LLM cleanup: short text fragments sent to Anthropic Claude Haiku for grammar & tone polish. We never train on your data.
- Cloud ASR fallback (older Macs only): audio sent to Groq for transcription when local Whisper isn’t supported. Discarded immediately after.
- Encrypted backup (Max plan only, opt-in): your transcript history, encrypted client-side with your key. We can’t read it.
